IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
BOLIVIA: Felipe III, 1598-1621, AR 8 reales (23.40g), Potosi, DM, KM-10, cob coinage, assayer R; crowned arms // cross with lions and castles in the angles, recovered from the wreck of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, with original Mel Fisher holder Grade 2, original Certificate of Authenticity, and black folder. On September 6, 1622, the heavily laden treasure galleon "Nuestra Senora de Atocha" of King Philip IV's Tierra Firme Fleet struck a reef and sank in a raging storm near the Florida Keys. More than two hundred and sixty persons perished and tons of gold, silver, and other precious cargo were lost to the sea. All attempts to locate the shipwreck failed until the location of the primary cultural deposit was made by Mel Fisher's Treasure Salvors, Inc., on July 20, 1985. The "Nuestra Senora de Atocha" carried over 200,000 hand-struck silver coins from mints in Potosi, Lima and Mexico City. Mel Fisher used a 5-point grading standard to assign a grade to each coin with Grade 1 the highest.
