IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
BOLIVIA: Felipe III, 1598-1621, AR 8 reales (26.26g), Potosí, ND (1598-1605)-P, KM-10, AC-910/920, assayer not clear, cob coinage, very mild corrosion from saltwater immersion, recovered from Nuestra Senora de Atocha shipwreck, with Mel Fisher tag, most of shield and cross visible, VF-XF, ex The San Diego Show Auction, September 18-19, 1987, Lot 3104; ex Atocha shipwreck (wtih Fisher tag). A very enigmatic piece, as the reverse is double struck and the two strikes appear to show two different assayers! On September 6, 1622, the heavily laden treasure galleon "Nuestra Senora de Atocha" of King Philip IV's Tierra Firme Fleet struck a reef and sank in a raging storm near the Florida Keys. More than two hundred and sixty persons perished and tons of gold, silver, and other precious cargo were lost to the sea. All attempts to locate the shipwreck failed until the location of the primary cultural deposit was made by Mel Fisher's Treasure Salvors, Inc., on July 20, 1985. The "Nuestra Senora de Atocha" carried over 200,000 hand-struck silver coins from mints in Potosi, Lima and Mexico City.
