BRITISH INDIA: AV medal (19.22g), 1903, 31mm 22kt gold award medal from the Madras Industrial and Arts Exhibition, arms of the Exhibition with map of India, elephants, palms, shells, and loom // INDUSTRIAL / AND ARTS / EXHIBITION / MADRAS / 1903 within laurel wreath with crown at top, awarded to R. L. Proudlock, Botanic Gardens curator, includes original plush box with broken hinge, and accompanying information including Proudlock's business card (!), with loop and ring for suspension, tooled fields, Unc. R.L. Proudlock was an attorney and curator of the government Botanic Gardens in Ootacamund, India. His invention was "a simple machine for extracting plantain fibre." Ootacamund is now called just Ooty and is derived from the classical name Udhagamandalam.
