MADRAS PRESIDENCY: AR double rupee, Arkat, AH1172 year 6 (frozen), Stv-3.338, KM-404.2. Prid-240, East India Company issue in the name of the Mughal Alamgir II, open lotus privy mark & floral elements; overstruck on a Spanish American 8 reales of either Carlos III or Carlos IV, as the letters ARO of "Carolus" are visible on the obverse (uncertain mint of the host), ANACS graded EF40. On July 15, 1807 a Proclamation authorized a full range of silver coins, including this new denomination, a double rupee, to be struck for the Madras Presidency. They were struck at the Arkat mint until 1812 and remained in circulation until 1817. The smaller slab is of the earliest encapsulations of ANACS.
