BRITISH WEST AFRICA: George VI, 1936-1952, shilling, 1952-H/KN, KM-28, Vice-FT86, H over KN mintmark, traces of KN still visible, a few spots, Unc. David Vice mentions similar pieces to these in his book The Coinage of British West Africa & St. Helena 1684-1958, although not for this date. Apparently the Royal Mint prepared the master punches for the Birmingham coinage, which bore both the H and KN mintmarks. When the dies were made, the unwanted mintmark was removed. Occasionally, the obliteration was not complete, and a weak or "ghost" mintmark remained. He mentions that this is known for the dates 1939-H, 1939-KN, 1940-H, and 1942-KN, to which this date can now be added.
