BUKHARA: 'Alim, 1910-1920, AE 20 tanga (6.76g), AHxxx7//1337, KM-51.2, A-3089E, NS-BA55, very rare error one-year subtype without alif before final yi in the mint name, uneven strike, a bit off-center, VF-XF, RR, ex Dr. Wolfgang Schuster Collection. The Manghits, an Uzbek tribe, assumed power in Bukhara from the Janid dynasty. In 1747 CE Manghit regent (Ataliq) Muhammad Rahim Biy murdered the Hanid khan Abu'l Fayz and became the actual ruler, since 1753 CE as emir; from then on, except for about two years of Muhammad Rahim's independent reign as khan, Mangit emirs ruled in the names of Janid puppet khans. Numismatically, the independent Emirate of Bukhara began in 1785 CE with the coinage of Shah Murad. In 1868 CE Bukhara came under the protectorate of Russia and maintained that status until 1917 CE. In 1920 CE, after a brief period of regained independence, the emirate was abolished and Bukharan Socialist Soviet Republic, its territory, was divided between the new Soviet Socialist Republics of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan, nowadays forming parts of the Republics of Uzbekistan, Turkemenistan, and Tadjikistan.
