BURMA/MYANMAR: Patriotic Liberation Army, AV 2 mu, ND (1970-71), KM-44, peacock // name of Burmese nationalist leader, U Nu, within star, variety with bottom diacritical mark of Burmese letter cui hand punched, a wonderful lustrous example! PCGS graded MS64, ex Howard A. Daniel III Collection. The Patriotic Liberation Army, a former rebel organization active in Myanmar from 1962-1974, issued three gold coins denominated 1, 2, and 4 mu. Each of the three coins is composed of pure 24-carat gold. A Green Peacock (Pavo muticus), a species of bird native to and revered in Myanmar, is displayed in the center of each coin's obverse. Above it is the Burmese title of the Union of Burma, and below the peacock are the dates 1970-1971 in Burmese numerals. Flanking the bird to the left and right are indications of the weight. Featured on the reverse of the three coins is the Burmese name of U Nu, the first and third Prime Minister of Myanmar. At some point, the government of the Union of Burma declared ownership of these coins illegal, and anyone in possession of one would be punished with death. As a result, many people often defaced the coins by pounding them into gold wafers.
