BUWAYHID: Sultan al-Dawla, 1012-1024, AR dirham (2.94g), Nawbandajan, AH413, A-1581, Treadwell-—, with Qur'an sura 112 on the reverse, nice strike and only very lightly cleaned, second known example (the first appeared in our Auction 34, Lot 729), excellent VF, RRR. Extremely rare mint, cited by Treadwell (page 330) only for an unverified example said to be in the ANS collection. The town of Nawbandajan was quite important in the early Islamic period, along the trade route between Arrajan and Shiraz, north of the modern city of Kazerun, but almost never a mint city. It was largely abandoned before the arrival of the Mongols, and only the ruins survive today.
