CANADA: AE medal, 1886, 38mm, copper medal by P. W. Ellis & Co., Thayendanegea - Captain Joseph Brant Monument Unveiled, THAYENDANEGEA - CAPTAIN JOSEPH BRANT / BORN 1842 DIED 1807 around bust of Brant right, wearing single-feather Indian headdress // BRANT MEMORIAL UNVEILED AT BRANTFORD CANADA 1886, the monument at Brantford in southwestern Ontario, About Unc, R. Thayendanegea was a Mohawk military and political leader based in present-day New York, who was closely associated with Great Britain during and after the American Revolution. Thayendanegea was given the Christian name of Joseph Brant and received an English education. Brant fought his first battle with the British when he was just a teenager. But this young warrior was also a visionary. Brant clearly understood that Native people faced inevitable change and united various nations to protect their interests. As war chief of the Six Nations and a British military captain, Brant was respected by both sides. And when the American War of Independence ended (1783), he acted as statesman and negotiated land for the Six Nations people. The P. W. Ellis & Co. was established in Toronto in 1879 and produced a wide range of silver holloware and flatware as well as being die-sinkers and medalists. P.W. Ellis & Company was taken over by Birks in 1928.
