CENTRAL GANGES REGION: Post-punchmarked, 4th/3rd century BC, AR vimshatika (4.23g), Pieper-78, complicated design, called "whorls" or "winding rivers" // traces of several weak punchmarks & 1 geometric countermark, VF, R, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. Struck rather than punchmarked, probably over on old vimshatika of Kosala or Kashi, likely several decades after 300 BC, when coin production was changing from punchmarked to struck. The original hoard, allegedly about 300 pieces, was found in the central Ganges River area, not in Bangladesh as claimed by the original consignor, from whom we listed about 15 pieces in Auctions 19 & 20 in 2014 with the consignor's "information", now debunked.
