CEYLON: AE unit (2.58g), 14mm, very stylized Roman type portrait // highly stylized two Roman soldiers with trophy between, local imitation, Fine, ex James Ambrose Higham Collection. James Ambrose Higham was Minister-Counselor at the Embassy of the United States of America in Ceylon. Lots 1728-1749 are a fascinating group of Ceylonese copper coins dating from about the 4th to the 12th century, enthusiastically collected by Higham many decades ago. Only a few of these have ever been published, and no comprehensive study of ancient and medieval Ceylon coinage has yet been undertaken.
