CHATTISGARH: Prasannamatra, 6th century AD, AV bracteate (1.30g), Garuda flanked by shankha and charka, Brahmi legend below, sri prasannamatra, Extremely Fine. Still apparently formally unpublished, though many have appeared at auction and on fixed price lists, including our own. When these first appeared in the market in the 1990s, we were told by the first suppliers that there was only a hoard of about 40-45 pieces, and they were offered wholesale at just over $1000 each, sold retail in the $1250-1500 range. But more and more kept appearing, and it soon became obvious that the suppliers were lying through their teeth. Many hundreds of specimens have appeared, and they are still coming out. So the price has collapsed, as nobody wants to pay much for a coin of unknown rarity. What a shame!
