CHILE: Fernando VII, 1808-1818, AR 8 reales, 1814-So, KM-80, El-72, assayer FJ, bright white luster, reflective surfaces, only two graded higher by NGC (April 2016), NGC graded MS62. The southern part of the Andes did produce some gold and silver, but not in the vast quantities found in the north. Early attempts to begin a mint in Santiago were met with failure. It was only in 1749 that a mint began small production. Mintages for the Pillar series of silver coins were very small. The later production of Portrait pieces were in much larger quantities, but still far fewer than most Spanish-American mints.
