CHINA: AE charm (19.13g), CCH-816, 44mm, Hu Ren Xi Shi ("A foreigner playing with a lion") charm, zhao cái jìn bao ("Attract wealth and riches"), huáng jin wàn liang ("[May you have] ten thousand liang of Gold"), with eight yuanbao (sycee) around // man playing with lion, lovely dark brown patina with sharp details, faint casting cracks, VF-XF. "Hu Ren" is an ancient name for foreigners in general and all nomads living to the North of and West of the Great Wall (Tartars, Mongols, Huns, Qidan, etc.). In ancient times foreigners from the West (Central Asia) used to bring lions to China for circus performances. Likely cast at the Suzhou Mint, Jiangsu Province during the Qing Dynasty.
