CHINA: AE charm (27.15g), CCC-1941, 54mm, twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, zi chou yin mao chen si wu wei shen you xu hai around // the Big Dipper constellation above circular hole, with auspicious cloud (xiangyun) below, two standing figures to the sides, Xuanwu (tortoise entwined by a snake, one of the Four Divine Creatures) and crane below hole, likely cast during the late Song dynasty, accompanied by old Western collector's tag, casting crack, VF, ex SARC Auction 38, Lot 1078. One interpretation of the theme of this charm is that it depicts the two sage kings Yao and Shun. Other interpretations variously identify the figures as two immortals, Lao Zi (Lao Tzu), the founding philosopher of Taoism, and Zhang Daoling, the founder of the first Taoist religious sect which was known as the "Five Bushels of Rice" (Wudou Mi Dao).
