CHINA: Kuang Hsu, 1875-1908, AE medal (15.39g), ND (ca. 1899-1908), Li page-30, 48x38mm uniface bronze-plated membership medal for the Chinese Empire Reform Association, portrait of the Emperor within an oval medallion with crossed flagsof the Empire above and C E B A - (5 Chinese characters) around // reverse blank, with integral loop at top for suspension, bold strike, plain edge, EF. The C.E.B.A. was founded in 1899 by Kang Youwei, the famed reformist who fled China after the coup of 1898 which ended the Hundred Days' Reform. It was composed of members of the Chinese diaspora loyal to the Emperor (who would remain under house arrest for the rest of his life) and had 103 chapters in major world cities with large Chinese populations. Interestingly, the pieces seen on CoinArchives all have an embossed appearance on the plain back, whereas this piece has a flat back. It has not been ground down, however, as there are many prominent die polish lines on the reverse.
