CHINA: Hsuan Tung, 1909-1911, enameled AE medal (12.47g), 1911, 32mm famine relief souvenir medal for the Chinese Empire Reform Association, two crossed flags, one with the globe above red, white, and blue horizontal stripes, the other the yellow dragon flag of the Qing Empire, tied together with ribbons; Hsuan Tung year 3 in Chinese above, along with zhong hua di guo xian zheng hui chou ban jiang wan xiang san sheng zhen juan ji nian pin ("souvenir for the relief work for Jiangsu, Anhui and Hunan by the Chinese Empire Reform Association"); below, 1911 / SOUVENIR / FOR / FAMINE RELIEF WORK BY / CHINESE EMPIRE REFORM ASSOCIATION, with loop as made, by Stork of New York, VF, RRR, ex Arlie Slabaugh Collection. The C.E.B.A. was founded in 1899 by Kang Youwei, the famed reformist who fled China after the coup of 1898 which ended the Hundred Days' Reform. It was composed of members of the Chinese diaspora loyal to the Kuang Hsu Emperor (who would remain under house arrest for the rest of his life) and had 103 chapters in major world cities with large Chinese populations.We cannot find another example of this medal in any publications or auctions.
