CHINA: Hung Hsien, 1915-1916, AR dollar, ND (1916), Y-332, L&M-942, Kann-663, struck for the intended inauguration of Yuan Shih-kai as Emperor Hung Hsien, facing bust of Yuan Shih-kai in military attire and tall, plumed hat // dragon flying left, PCGS graded AU55. On 12 December 1915, Yuan proclaimed himself Emperor of the Chinese Empire under the era name of Hongxian (Constitutional Abundance). The new Empire of China was to formally begin on 1 January 1916, when Yuan Shikai, the Hongxian Emperor, intended to conduct the accession rites. Funding for the Hongxian Emperor's accession ceremony was cut on 1 March 1916, and Yuan Shikai formally abandoned the empire on 22 March 1916 after a 'reign' of only 83 days.
