CHINA: MING: Hong Zhi, 1488-1505, AE cash (3.27g), H-—, huo ping xin bao, crude casting, Fine, ex Shawn Hamilton Collection. Under the Ming dynasty the territory which used to belong to the Dali Kingdom cast their own coins. These cash coins were issued in the province of Yunnan under the reign of the Hongzhi Emperor and are known to be of poor workmanship and crude casting. It is often unknown if these cash coins were cast by the Bai people in Dali, the Hmong tribes living in the area, or one of the many other tribes that live in Yunnan as records of their casting weren't being kept. Many of these cash coins were also cast by using regular cash coins as "mother coins" which explains their rather crude appearances.
