CHINA: Republic, AE medal (112.32g), 1921, 63mm, memorial medal for the 1907-08 Holm-Nestorian Expedition to Xi'an, Shaanxi, made by Alfred Bruce-Joy, struck at the Paris Mint, bust right, FRITS HOLM; in small letters below, ALBERT BRVCE-JOY FECIT MCMXXI // DEN / HOLM-NESTORIANSKE / EXPEDITION TIL SIANFV / SHENSI N. V. KINA / MCMVII. VIII / TIL MINDE; beyond dotted inner border, radiant sun at 12h, dà qín jing jiào liú xíng zhong guó bei ("Memorial of the Propagation in China of the Luminous Religion [Nestorian Christianity] from the Great Qin [Eastern Roman Empire]"); serial number 174 on edge, Unc. Frits Vilhelm Holm (c. 1881-1930) was a Danish scholar and adventurer, best known for his attempt in 1907 to "obtain" the famous Nestorian Stele an 8th-century bilingual monument documenting the history of early Christianity in China and sell it to a Western museum. Alerted to his activities, the local authorities moved the monument from its outdoor location on the western outskirts of Xi'an, and into the Stele Forest museum, where it resides to this day. In order not to leave China empty-handed, the disappointed Holm ordered an exact copy of the stele in Xi'an and shipped it to New York, where it was exhibited for 10 years before a wealthy New Yorker purchased it and sent it to Rome as a gift for the pope.
