CHINA: Republic, AR dollar, Tientsin Mint, year 10 (1921), L&M-864; K-676; WS-0101; Chang-CH234, Hsu Shih-chang 'Pavilion' type, variety with reeded edge and with legend at bottom of reverse, light hairlines, filed rims (4-5 rim dents removed), some areas of pleasant toning on the reverse, a collectible example of this popular type, PCGS graded UNC details, ex Almer H. Orr III Collection. The Xu Shichang Dollar (Pavilion Dollar) is one of the most sought-after coins in Chinese numismatics. Dated Month 9 of Year 10 (1921), it depicts President Xu in a decorated Western-style suit jacket and a presidential sash. On the reverse, four figures in traditional Chinese robes greet one another on the steps of a pavilion, alongside the phrase "ren shou tong deng" ("Virtue and longevity ascend together"). Some writers have suggested it was issued to celebrate both President Xu's 66th birthday and 3rd anniversary in office (both occurring in October, which is the 9th month in the Chinese calendar). Others argue it was struck for the opening of the Peking Union Medical College, which was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.
