CHINA: gilt AE medal, 1896, L&M-934var, 40mm, gilt copper medal for Li Hung Chang's (Li Hongzhang) Visit to the Hamburg Mint; facing bust of Li wearing cap, Chinese inscription around // DIE DEUTSCHE MÜNZTECHNIK - 24 JUNI 1896 around central circle with text inside, ZUR ERINNERUNG / AN DEN BESUCH / LI HUNG CHANG'S / IN DEUTSCHLAND, date below, lightly tooled, PCGS UNC Details, ex Almer H. Orr III Collection. In 1896, Li attended the coronation of Nicholas II of the Russian Empire on behalf of the Qing Empire and toured Europe, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Great Britain, before departing to Canada and the United States. While in Germany he made an appearance with Otto von Bismarck at his estate in Friedrichsruh and was awarded the Roter Adlerorden (Order of the Red Eagle) by Kaiser Wilhelm II during his stay in Germany. Li visited many cities in Germany including Berlin, Stettin, Magdeburg, Cologne, Kiel, and Hamburg. The obverse of the medal is derived from a work by Hermann Heide. Although it cannot be confirmed, it is generally believed that the Magdeburg merchant and exporter Heinrich Knape may have ordered two medals with this obverse.
