CHITALDURG: Madakeri Nayaka I, 1565-1602, AV pagoda, Mitch-939, Durga seated facing, wearing turreted headdress // Devanagari inscription, sri pratapa krishnaraya, bold style, a superb lustrous strike, NGC graded MS65. The Nayakas of Chitradurga were Vijayanagar feudatories who started to exercise their independence in the 16th century as Vijayanagar started to weaken. Their pagodas imitate the Balakrishna pagodas of Krishna Devaraya and were struck for many years, likely into the 18th century.
