COLOMBIA: Republic, 2-1/2 centavos, 1901, KM-L1, Restrepo-360.1, Leprosarium Coinage, a well struck example with full bold details on both sides, with usual die crack through date into inner reverse field, PCGS graded AU55, RRR, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection. Part of a special coinage for use in the three government leper colonies ("Lazaretos" in Spanish) of Agua de Dios, Cano de Lord, and Contratacion. The hospitals were closed in the late 1950s and patients were allowed to exchange these special coins for regular currency at any bank. The Standard Catalog of World Coins states that only a few examples are known of this denomination.
