CONTEMPORARY COUNTERFEITS: UNITED STATES: Jefferson nickel, 1944, as KM-192a, contemporary counterfeit, famous "Henning" issue, without mintmark! in ICG Counterfeit holder, ICG graded VG10. In the mid-1950s, Francis Henning of Erial, New Jersey made what is now known as the "Henning" Nickel. He made counterfeit pieces dated 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947 and 1953. The 1944 nickels were quickly spotted since Henning neglected to add the large mintmark. They are popular and very collectable.
