IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
COSTA RICA: 50 centavos token, ND, Rulau-SJS42, wage token in copper-nickel, COSTA RICA RAILWAY - C. R // 50 CENTAVOS, lightly lustrous, Choice AU. In June 1885, Don Minor Keith signed in London, as agent and representative of the Government of Costa Rica, arrangements that would allow completion of the railroad to the Atlantic. The company was created on April 22, 1886 as the Costa Rica Railway Company Limited, domiciled in England. The construction of the missing lines was started and the reconstruction of the entire Port of Limón, with drainage, sewerage and supply works. The project was completed on December 6, 1890. The company had tokens in copper-nickel minted to pay the workers who were doing their work along the railroad at Atlántico, also installing comisariatos ("Stores") where the tokens could be used for purchase of products. These tokens were minted with values of 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents; on the obverse they had the inscription "Costa Rica Railway - C.R" and on the reverse the face value.
