COSTA RICA: AV ½ escudo, ND (1849-57), KM-80, countermark type VI (HABILITADA PO EL GOBIERNO "Enabled by Government" around lion) on Central American Republic 1846 ½ escudo (KM-13.1), Costa Rica mint, assayer JB, with natural flan crack caused by countermarking, Fine to VF. In the mid-nineteenth century, Costa Rica suffered from recurring coin shortages, which the mint in San José was incapable of alleviating. To extend the life of lightweight and worn coinage, the government counterstamped numerous coins of Central America and other foreign countries in the 1840-50's. This counterstamp is catalogued as "type VI" and was used from 1849-57 on coins of Great Britain, as well as local issues.
