CUBA: AE medal, 1950, 76mm bronze medal celebrating the Centennial of the Cuban Flag; MEDALLA COMMEMORATIVA above Cuban National Flag waving in the wind, AÑO DEL CENTENARIO DE LA BANDERA DE CUBA below // 19 DE MAYO DE 1850 above a battle scene of the "Taking of Cardenas by Narciso Lopez", TOMA DE CARDENAS POR NARCISO LOPEZ below, with original wood box of issue, UNC. The Lopez Expedition (Expedición López) of 1851 was an attempt led by Narciso López to invade and seize control of Cuba, which was then part of the Spanish Empire. The force comprising 420 Cuban emigres and American volunteers landed in western Cuba, where the invaders were defeated and captured by the Spanish forces. López and many of the other prisoners, including around fifty Americans, were executed. In reaction, mobs rioted in New Orleans, destroying the Spanish consulate and ransacking Spanish-owned shops. Despite the inflamed public mood, the administration of Millard Fillmore was embarrassed by the failure to prevent the expedition from sailing in the first place and confined itself to securing the release of remaining American prisoners still in Spanish hands. The expedition fought under the recently-designed flag of Cuba.
