DANISH INDIA: TRANQUEBAR: Frederik III, 1648-1670, lead kas (2.57g), "76" (for 1667), KM-88, Gray-73d, Jensen-141, crowned F3 // lotus, with numbers "76 ", intended for 1667 with the 6 and 7 reversed, VF-XF, RR, ex Solar Collection. The date cannot be 1676 because Frederik's reign ended in 1670. It also seems clear that this 1667 issue represents a reduced weight standard for the lead kas. Five examples of this 1667 type sold in our auctions weigh between 2.19g and 2.57g, with a standard of about 2.45g. This standard continued under Christian V, who also issued the lead 2 kas with a standard of about 4.90g. Lead coinage terminated in 1689, replaced by the copper 1 kas of about 1.00g and a possible 2 kas. I also suspect that some of the undated lead types of Frederik III might have been struct to the reduced standard of 2.45g, to be determined after more specimens are published with their weight.
