DANISH WEST INDIES: Christian IX, 1863-1906, AR 20 cents / 1 franc, 1905, KM-79, lustrous fields, Choice AU. The semi-nude female figures on the reverse are allegories representing the three main islands of the Danish West Indies: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. This type displays two denominations (franc and 20 cents) because of a major monetary reform enacted by Denmark in 1905. To align the colony's currency with the international gold standard of the Latin Monetary Union, the Danish West Indies introduced the Franc (divided into bits) while maintaining the existing Daler (divided into cents) system. The dual denomination ensured that the coin could be seamlessly utilized under both the old and new reckoning systems during the transition.
