DENMARK: Frederik III, 1648-1670, AR medal (156.8g), 1659, Galster 84, Fieweger Coll. 46, 73mm silver medal (restrike, likely produced in the 19th century) on the Recovery of Funen by the Danish-Brandenburg-Austrian Troops and the Battle of Nyborg on November 14 by J. Hercules, elephant right trampling a snake and crushing an ibex in its trunk with man falling off its back // MAGNANIMI / PRETIO QUOS VIS / VEL SUSCITAT ASTUS / IAM DERELLATIS / UNDIQVE TUTUS / ERO: / XIV NOVEMB: / MDCLIX:, N stamped on edge indicating "new strike" in Danish or restrike, with light orange toning around high points, Choice AU, RR (as restrike), ex Jerry D. Williams Collection. The elephant here represents Denmark, the falling man is the Swedish field marshal Palatine Philip of Sulzbach, the ibex is the other Swedish field marshal Stenbock, and Sweden is the snake. The motto of the Order is on the reverse. The allied troops soundly defeated the Swedes and returned Funen, Denmark's third largest island, to Danish control. Photo size reduced.
