The First Schleswig War (1848-1850), also known as the Three Years' War, the Schleswig-Holstein War, or the Schleswig-Holstein Uprising, was a military conflict in southern Denmark and northern Germany, contesting the issue of who should control the mainly German-speaking Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg. Ultimately, the Danish side proved victorious with the diplomatic support of the great powers. This medal was given to Norwegian and Swedish volunteers fighting for Denmark in the war.
