DURRANI: Ahmad Shah, 1747-1772, AR rupee (11.24g), Shahjahanabad (Delhi), year 19, A-3092, KM-763, without the Hijri date, but very clear mint name and regnal year 19, lovely strike, lightly cleaned, unpublished and unreported, strong Very Fine, RRR. The reverse die is clearly the product of the Delhi mint, but the obverse die is of quite different calligraphy. Since the Durranis never approached Delhi during Ahmad Shah's regnal year 19, there are two principal interpretations of this piece. Most likely is that it was struck just before Ahmad and his forces actually entered the city of Delhi, using a quickly engraved obverse die and an old year 19 die of the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. It is also possibly a later issue by the opponents of Muhammad Shah who perhaps anticipated a third conquest of Delhi by Ahmad Shah, but that never happened.
