DURRANI: Ahmad Shah, 1747-1772, AV mohur (10.80g), Najibabad, AH1180 year 21, A-3090, KM-689, Whitehead-49, standard design, with the couplet of Ahmad Shah and the date on the obverse, the traditional mint formula and the regnal year on the reverse; one of the rarest Durrani mints, XF-AU, ex Spink Auction 12027, lot 526 (December 2012). Najibabad was founded by the Rohilla Nawab Najib-ud-Dawla in the 1740s. Rohilla coins in the name of the Mughal Emperor were struck every year at Najibabad from about AH1168 until Najibabad was conquered by the Nawab of Awadh (Oudh) at the end of 1187. Until 1176 all coins are of purely Mughal designs, but starting in 1177 the Rohillas added their symbol, a stylized katar, to the right of the regnal year on the reverse. The Rohillas were of Pashtun origin from the hill region of western Pakistan and adjacent areas in Afghanistan, eventually settling in Uttar Pradesh in India. The Durrani forces began a advance into India in AH1180 but never advanced beyond the Sutlej states. It seems that the Rohillas at Najibabad briefly struct silver and gold coins with the Rohilla symbol in 1180 in the name of the Durrani Ahmad Shah, either in fear of Durrani forces reaching Najibabad or more likely requesting Durrani assistance against their own rivals such as the Nawabs of Awadh. The only Najibabad coin in the name of Ahmad Shah filed on CoinArchives is this piece; there are no silver examples.
