EGYPT: AE medal, 1930, 67mm, bronze medal by Maillard for the French Cairo Textile Exposition, G. Philippar, President; GEORGES PHILIPPAR, before bust of same, signed by engraver Aug. Maillard 1930 at right // view of the Grand Mosque of Cairo, AV PRESIDENT / DV COMITE D'ORGANISATION / DE L'EXPOSITION FRANCAISE / AV CAIRE / MCMXXIX, in original green case of issue! Unc. Georges Philippar was born on 16 October 1883 in Fontenay-aux-Roses. He was a French shipbuilder and joined the Messageries Maritimes company in 1912, becoming its chief executive officer in 1925. Auguste Maillard (1866-1944) was a gifted French medalist and sculptor. He resided in Paris and was a pupil of Dalou Gaudez and Falguiere. He obtained the following awards: Salon of 1894 Medal of the Third Class for a bronze statue La Defense du Sol; Salon of 1898 Medal of the Second Class (for a marble statue acquired by the French government -The Fall Icarus); and Universal Exhibition of 1900 Medal of the Third Class.
