ETHIOPIA: AV medal (39.08g), EE"1889" (1897), Gill-S40, KM-X1, bust of Menelik II (1889-1913) / stylized Lion of Judah, holding cross with banderole in its right front paw, with the denomination "one birr" (used for the silver crown), faint hairlines, Uncirculated, RR. This medal was struck at the John Pinches mint in England in the 1950s for Geoffrey Hearn, who produced a number of such fantasy coins, including Ceylon (lot 1390 in this auction). The John Pinches mint was opened about 1840, became a major producer of medals and related items until it was bought by the Franklin Mint in 1969.
