ETHNOGRAPHIC: AFRICA: leather bag, 16.5 x 13.5cm, red sewn leather bag decorated with palm tree figure and striped patterns, threaded with strap, containing a desiccated paw of a large predator (58 x 95mm) with five attached claws plus four loose claws, partial tear in one of the strap holders, a very unusual item! VF, ex Charles Opitz Collection. This item was brought back from Africa in the 1920's by missionaries. The significance of the animal paw and claws is unknown, as the consignor was entirely unaware of their existence.
