FATIMID: al-'Aziz, 975-996 (AH365-386), AR imitative dirham (2.51g), A-, local imitation, theoretically derived from a coin or other object of al-'Aziz; typical calligraphy of his period, mint name quite clearly misr and a date likely derived from either AH382 or 386; in our opinion this is likely of North African origin struck after death of al-'Aziz, possibly by several decades, VF, RRRR. The reverse center cites al-'Aziz by his kunya Abu'l-Mansur; the reverse center legend is uncertain, with "Allah" at the top and uncertain word(s) below. The North African territories west of Tunis were lost to the Fatimids by the time of al-'Aziz, and only a small area was brought under control of the Umayyads of Spain, with the rest falling into the hands of numerous petty states, nearly all of which never struck coins. The quality of this piece resembles both Fatimid and Spanish Umayyad styles.
