FATIMID: al-Hakim, 996-1021, AV dinar (4.13g), Misr, AH387, A-709.2, fine callligraphy, nice strike, VF to EF. For type A-709.2, fine calligraphy is known only for AH387 and some examples of 388 at Misr and most other mints, badly engraved by the early 390s, and truly appalling by AH401, during which year a new type was adopted (A-709.3), always of fine calligraphy (except some North African mints). Thus from AH387 until 401, it seems that the same engraver, and perhaps some of his assistants, coarsely engraved the dies. It is no wonder that the authorities finally realized in AH401 that it was time to hire new engraving staff at their mints!
