FRANCE: AE medal (16.55g), ND (1793), Hennin-571, 37x32mm oval gilt bronze medal regarding Actions of the Law by Jean-Theodore Maurisset, book supported by a sword surmounted by the bonnet of Liberty, and placed on two fasces in saltire, with olive branches flanking, above book (inscribed DECRETS-LOI), at left, a serpent looks into a mirror with the hand of justice opposite, with LOIX, JUSTICE, UNION, FORCE D'UN PEUPLE LIBRE. around // ACTIONS / DE / LA LOI within oak wreath with MAURISSET. F. at bottom, with loop and ring for suspension, lightly cleaned with some scratches on the reverse, plain edge, VF to EF. This medal was assigned to bailiffs, trade guards, and executors of judgements on December 31, 1793, by decree of the National Assembly and sanctioned by the King. After the establishment of the Republican government, the obverse of the medal had to be changed, thus several other varieties exist reflecting the change to the Republique.
