FRANCE: AE medal, 1917, Wurzbach-9029, 37mm silver medal by Seraphin E. Vernier, City of Verdun Medal of Recognition; ON NE PASSE PAS (They Shall not Pass) above a figure representing the ever-youthful spirit of Verdun: a young woman with clenched fist, a helmet on her head and a sword in her hand // VERDUN above old gateway to the citadel, "21 FEVRIER 1916" below, with certificate and original case of issue, a lovely mint state example! PCGS graded MS63. The Battle of Verdun, the largest and longest battle between the French and German armies on the Western Front, began on February 21, 1916. On November 20, the Town Council of Verdun dedicated the Verdun medal to "The heroes, known and unknown, both dead and living, who have triumphed over the barbarians’ onslaught and immortalized her name throughout the world and for ages to come."
