FRANCE: AE medal (252.51g), 1842, 73mm large bronze medal by Laurent Joseph Hart on the Death of Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orléans; FERDINAND P. L. C. H. DUC D’ORLEANS around high-relief military bust of the Duke left, designer's name below // JAMAIS DOULEUR NE FUT PLUS SINCERE above a draped female figure standing, mourning and placing a wreath upon the tomb, which is adorned with the crowned arms of the Duke; to the left and right are panels inscribed with BELGIQUE (Belgium) and ALGÉRIE (Algeria), acknowledging the locations where he notably served, in exergue CHAMBRES LÉGISLATIVES / DE BELGIQUE / VI AOUT MDCCCXLII, designer's name at bottom, AU. Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orléans (1810–1842), eldest son of King Louis-Philippe, was a prominent military figure in the early French conquest of Algeria, participating in campaigns between 1835 and 1840. While he was a key military leader for France, his activities directly opposed the resistance led by Emir Abdel Kader, a prominent Algerian military and religious leader fighting French colonial efforts during that period.
