FRANCE: AE medal, ND, 68mm, Agriculture art deco medal by Maurice René Thénot, LABOURAGE ET PÂTURAGE SONT LES DEUX MAMELLES DE LA FRANCE (ploughing and grazing are the two teats of France), SULLY below, around bared female figure amongst fields of grain / ploughing scene above, and cattle grazing below with central area for engraving, EF, S. The obverse phrase was coined by Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully and minister of King Henri IV, who encouraged agriculture. For this purpose he proclaimed the freedom of the grain trade, and abolished many tolls that were barriers between French provinces. Photo size reduced.
