FRANCE: AE medal, Cross of Voluntary Military Services (Croix des Services Militaires Volontaires), with original ribbon, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Cross for Voluntary Military Service was a French decoration created on May 13, 1934, to reward volunteers in the military reserve forces. It was awarded in three grades; bronze, silver, and gold, for voluntary service, distinct from combat-specific awards. The obverse features a helmeted head, the inscription "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE," and a ribbon with a central red stripe flanked by blue, and includes privy marks of the Monnaie de Paris.
