FRANCE: AR medal, Colonial Medal (Médaille Coloniale), with EXTRÊME-ORIENT clasp, and original ribbon, AU, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Colonial Medal was a French decoration created by the "loi de finances" of July 26, 1893 to reward "military services in the colonies, resulting from participation in military operations, in a colony or a protectorate." The Extrême-Orient clasp for the French Colonial Medal was instituted on August 5, 1946. It was awarded to military personnel for service against the Japanese from March 9 to September 10, 1945 and against Viet Minh forces from September 23, 1945, onwards in Indo-China. Eligibility was extended to civilians on July 19, 1948.
