FRANCE: Louis-Philippe I, 1830-1848, AE medal (88.90g), 1840, Bramsen-1998, 59mm; J.B. KLEBER / GÉNÉRAL EN CHEF EN EGYPTE (1753-1800), statue of Kléber on pedestal, completed in 1840, signed by C.F Emmerich F. and P. Grass Statuaire // STRASBOURG 1840, view of the city of Strasbourg, signed by C.F. Emmerich F. for the inauguration of the statue in Strasbourg of General Kléber (1753-1800) who died in Cairo, some original luster, AU. After retaking Cairo, Kléber began to devote his energy to reorganizing the administration of Egypt. Meanwhile Kléber's defeated Turkish opponent Grand Vizier Youssef Pasha published writings claiming Kléber was a destroyer of religion and called upon all Muslims to slaughter the infidels and in particular their commander, offering further rewards and protection to anyone who could accomplish this. A religious student named Soleyman-el-Halepi took it upon himself to answer this call and the Grand Vizier gave him a dagger, a camel, and thirty pieces of silver to accomplish his task. On June 14th Kléber and his chief of staff General Damas were in Cairo for lunch. As they walked through a garden, the assassin surprised them and stabbed Kléber six times with a dagger. Kléber died a short time later, on the same day as General Desaix's death on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea at the Battle of Marengo. His assassin was quickly captured and publicly executed.
