DUC D'ORLÉANS, around bust right, signature BORREL F. below, CHAPELLE SAINT FERDINAND / SOUS L'INVOCATION DE NOTRE DAME / DE LA COMPASSION, Chapel of St. Ferdinand with BORREL 1846 either side, in exergue ÉLEVÉE A LA MÉMOIRE / DE S. A. R. L. F. P. DUC D'ORLÉANS / PRINCE ROYAL / INAUGURÉE LE 11 JUILLET / 1843, a wonderful mint state example! PCGS graded MS64. Prince Ferdinand Philippe, Duke of Orléans (1810-1842) was the eldest son of King Louis Philippe I of France and Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily. On 13 July 1842 he was killed when the horses of his carriage ran out of control at Sablonville in the Hauts-de-Seine département, he lost his balance and fractured his skull, and, despite the best attentions of his doctors, the 31-year-old Duke died some hours later, surrounded by family members who had rushed to the scene.
