FRANCE: Louis XIV, 1643-1715, AE medal, 1686, Divo-216, 41mm bronze medal by Jean Mauger for Louis XIV Receiving the Siamese Ambassadors; LVDOVICVS MAGNVS REX CHRISTIANISS, around bust of King right // FAMA VIRTVTIS above King sitting on his throne in the Versailles gallery, holding a cane; three Siamese ambassadors bowing deeply before him, ORATORES REGIS SIAM MDCLXXXVI in exergue, likely a contemporary original issue, PCGS graded AU50, ex Howard A. Daniel III Collection. This medal, which shows the Siamese embassy's formal audience in the Hall of Mirrors, was struck to commemorate and publicize the event. Each ambassador received a gift afterward from the king. The monetary value correlated to each man's rank: a diamond-mounted boîte à portrait for the lead ambassador (Kosa Pan), and gold medals on chains, possibly of this design, for the second and third ambassadors. A very early European medal related to diplomatic relations with Thailand.
