FRANCE: Louis XIV, 1643-1715, AR ecu aux 8 livres, Metz, 1690-L. KM-275.9. Dav-3811, draped bust right, with small sun above in legend // eight crowned L's in cruciform pattern with mintmark in small circle at center, light golden tone, very bold strike, extremely high grade for this type, NGC graded MS62, S, ex R. L. Lissner Collection.

Louis XIV, the Sun King, was from the House of Bourbon, and his rule is still the longest for any monarch in European history, coming in at over 72 years. In all, France was in five wars during his reign, which the French Government couldn't afford. He did, however, succeed in centralizing power and solidifying an absoulte monarchy, which was to continue until the French Revolution.
