FRANCE: Louis XV, 1715-1774, AR écu vertugadin, Besançon, 1716, KM-414.27, Gadoury-317, "reformation" flan, struck over 1709-14-G écu aux 3 couronnes, lightly polished, some original luster, EF, R3 (Gadoury). This issue was part of the coinage reform of December 1715. Changes of type were made in 1689, 1715, and 1720, with each one often overstruck on its predecessor and issued at an increased value. For instance, the 1689 écu aux 8 L's were issued at 66 sols, but replaced by the écu aux palmes in 1693 at 72 sols (Mayhew).
